BECOMING HORIZONS
“(…)
soon you can see yourself walking – you’re just a couple of yards behind and you are following yourself. Go right, go left: themain thing is just to continue walking . The end of the world isnot when everything stops. It’s when everything continues, unend- ingly. Nothing else to do but put one foot in front of the other-beneath a cold moon.”
fragment from “End of the World”, A Philosophy of Walking, Frederic Gros
ABOUT THE RESEARCH
Over the course of a week, the “Becoming Horizons” artistic research project took place on Terschelling Island, immersing in its varied landscapes to connect the external environment with the internal self. It was born out of long walks and spending time with the island’s windswept dunes, serene beaches, and ever-changing tides. I started exploring the space as an emotional and existential experience.
Through movement, observation, and creative expression, the research aimed to distill the essence of the island into a state of being, a reflective synthesis where nature and self resonate deeply.
To become an island is to embody solitude and interconnectedness simultaneously. It means embracing a sense of self-contained existence while being shaped by the tides, winds, and rhythms of a larger whole. An island is defined not just by its boundaries but by its relationship with the surrounding sea, its isolation creates identity, yet it is never truly apart from the world.
To become an island is to live in constant dialogue with the horizon: a place that invites exploration yet always remains just out of reach. It is to exist at the meeting point of land, sea, and sky, where every step further away takes us closer to dissolution.
As we walk toward the distance, our figures grow smaller, fading into the vastness of the landscape, reminding us of the unmaking of self within something far greater. The horizon pulls us forward, not to arrive but to unravel: an endless cycle of unbecoming, shaped by the journey and the forces that carry us beyond ourselves.
